Chipleader at End of Day 3
It looked like the WPT Venice tournament would end with Team Titan’s Marvin Rettenmaier claiming the first prize. When Day 3 concluded, Marvin was the chipleader, as he posted on Facebook:
Booom!!! Finished day 3 of WPT Venice as Chipleader.... 15 left...got 817k, average at 426k... playing down to the final 6 tmr... time to run good for once...
But the tournament victory was not to be.
On what was described as the “most intense hand of Day 4”, Marvin was up against Italian player Michele Caroli.
As described on the WPT website:
Caroli raised to 50,000 in the cutoff, Rettenmaier three-bet to 156,000 in the big blind and Caroli called. The flop was K♦ Q♥ 9♣ and Rettenmaier's 126,000 c-bet was quickly called by Caroli. The turn was the 6♣ and Rettenmaier bet 176,000 and Caroli once again called. The final card was the 7♣ and Rettenmaier moved all-in for 220,000 and Caroli called. Rettenmaier turned over A♦ K♠ for top pair but Caroli had T♥ 8♥ for the straight.
According to the live update report, the players at the table sat in shock for many moments, not realizing that Caroli had hit the straight.
As Marvin got up to leave the table he reportedly said, “That's the craziest thing I have ever seen at the poker table!"
Marvin finished in 8th place for a prize of $20,135.
